Dr. Horowitz is a neurosurgeon with the Pennsylvania Brain and Spine Institute. He practices all aspects of cranial and spinal neurosurgery and is board certified in neurological surgery. He is fellowship trained in endovascular neurosurgery, with specialized interests in vascular neurology/neurosurgery, stroke, facial pain syndromes, hemi facial spasm, brain tumors and hydrocephalus.
Dr. Horowitz practiced for 19 years at UPMC, serving as director of vascular and endovascular neurosurgery, director of the Center for Cranial Nerve Disorders and chief of neurosurgery at UPMC Presbyterian. He was the first neurosurgeon to practice endovascular neurosurgery in Western Pennsylvania. Dr. Horowitz was a tenured professor of neurosurgery and radiology and has authored more than 150 articles in peer-reviewed journals, numerous textbook chapters and a textbook on endovascular neurosurgery. He also has received more than $2 million in National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding as a primary investigator looking into the relationship between aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage and myocardial infarction.
Dr. Horowitz received his bachelor’s degree from Williams College, where he graduated cum laude with highest honors in biology. He received his medical degree from the University of Rochester and performed his neurosurgery residency at the University of Pittsburgh. He completed a fellowship in endovascular neurosurgery at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas and was an attending surgeon at UT Southwestern for three years before returning to Pittsburgh in 1999. Dr. Horowitz has been named to Best Doctors in America since 2003.

Dr. Spiro leads the spinal surgery team of the Pennsylvania Brain and Spine Institute and practices all aspects of cranial and spinal neurosurgery. He is board certified in neurological surgery and fellowship trained in spinal surgery, with specialized interest in spinal abnormalities, oncology and general neurosurgery.
Dr. Spiro practiced for 14 years at UPMC, serving as director and chief of neurological spine surgery and liaison to the hospital’s surgical oversight committee before joining PBSI. He has published extensively in peer-reviewed medical journals on the topic of complex spinal reconstruction, has been named to Best Doctors of America and has been listed by Becker’s Orthopedics as one of the top 100 spine surgeons in the United States.
He attended the United States Coast Guard Academy and Johns Hopkins University, where he received bachelor’s degrees in both biomedical engineering and material science engineering. He received his medical degree from the University of South Alabama, where he graduated first in his class. He performed his neurosurgery residency and fellowship in complex spinal surgery at the University of Pittsburgh.
